How It Works
Your Journey
You’ve already taken the first step by being here. We’ve broken down the next steps to make your journey as easy and seamless as possible.
1. Book a Free Consultation
A consultation is an essential first step to help determine if Held Humanity and our counsellors are the right fit for you. It’s a great opportunity to meet with a counsellor, learn how they work with clients, and ask questions.
During your free 15-minute phone consultation, we will cover:
- Have you been to counselling before? How was that process for you?
- What's bringing you to counselling now?
- What are your hopes and goals in counselling?
- Administrative matters and next steps with consents and policies.
2. Book Your Appointment
If you have decided to proceed following your consultation, notify your counsellor. A profile will be created for you in JaneApp so you can book a time that works for you. You will need to complete intake and confidentiality forms before your first session.
JaneApp can be accessed through a web browser. Chrome is recommended. Please note that JaneApp does not work in Safari.
3. Your First Session
During your first session, you and your counsellor will get to know each other to determine goodness of fit. This is the beginning of co-creating a space that supports your wellness and goals in therapy. The therapeutic process is completely unique to you. You get to decide when you are comfortable to share, what you want to share, and with who.
Following your first appointment, it is recommended that you book a weekly session for the next 2 to 3 weeks to establish a strong foundation for your therapeutic work.
4. Assess Your Experience
After a few sessions, take time for yourself to self-assess your experience. We encourage you to speak with your counsellor if you feel you aren’t getting what you need out of your sessions. Most of the time, you and your counsellor will be able to find a solution together.
If you still think your counsellor may not be the right fit, please feel free to discuss this with your current therapist who will do their best to provide resources for referrals. It’s most important that you find the counsellor who is right for you.

All Services
Held Humanity is a 100% online counselling service to meet you where you are. Our counselling services are offered to adults in Alberta (18+), British Columbia and Ontario (19+).
The human experience is wide-ranging and includes everything from daily stressors to anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, exploring relationships, as well as matters of self your identity. We offer people-centered, evidence-based practices to help support and manage your mental well-being so you can thrive.
Evidence Based Practices
In line with our practical approach, Held Humanity offers a range of evidence-based practices. We will work with you to determine the best fit and best course of action.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ‘CBT’
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidenced-based talk therapy that focuses on how you think, feel, and behave. CBT uses practical tools to help you learn how to cope with unhelpful thinking or behavioural patterns.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing ‘EMDR’
Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced-based practice that is effective for treating symptoms of distress and trauma. EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy. It’s an interactive practice that is multi-phasic that is guided by your therapist.
Mindfulness Counselling
Mindfulness focuses on being in the present. Practicing mindfulness invites you to be fully present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgement. Mindfulness can be effective for managing stress or controlling anxiety and is known to promote emotional health.
Person Centered
Everyone can benefit from counselling. We are here to meet you exactly where you are at, to honor who you are, and to support your therapeutic journey with respect, empathy, confidentiality, and warmth.
Safe and Sound Protocol ‘SSP’
"The Safe and Sound Protocol is a non-invasive application of Polyvagal Theory. It helps clients learn to regulate their nervous system and reduce anxiety and stress." [borrowed from the Unyte | ILS website].
Socially Focused
Context is everything. Really. It's important to us that we focus on both on your internal experiences and the world around you. This means considering the systems and structures of society, the groups and greater community you are a part of, and how that impacts you.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy ‘SFBT’
Solution-focused therapy is very effective for goal-oriented individuals or clients seeking a type of therapy to address a specific goal.
Deep Brain Reorienting ‘DBR’
Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a trauma specific therapy that focuses on the treatment of attachment shock, and can also be helpful for other unresolved trauma experiences.
How Does It Work?
We help individuals on their counselling journey. The process will begin with these 6 simple steps:
Step 1 - Pick Your Therapist
Goodness of fit is the most important aspect when choosing a counsellor.
We encourage you to read each counsellor’s profile and book a free 15 minute phone consultation with them.
Step 2 - Initial Phone Consultation
During your free 15 minute phone consultation, your counsellor will ask about:
- Have you been to counselling before? How was that process for you?
- What’s bringing you to counselling now? You can discuss current issues and concerns.
- What are your hopes and goals in counselling?
- They will tell you how they work with their clients.
- This is a great opportunity to ask any questions and to see if they are the right fit for you.
Step 3 - Book Your Appointment
Free Phone Consultation: 15 Minutes
Check-Ins: 25 Minutes [for existing clients only]
Standard Clinical Hour: 50 minutes
EMDR: 80 Minutes
Step 4 - Complete JaneApp Forms
Once you’ve decided on a counsellor and have decided to book a session, an online profile will be created for you in JaneApp.
You will need to fill out the intake and confidentiality forms prior to your first session.
Step 5 - Your First Session!
Welcome to your first session with your counsellor.
The first session will involve getting to know you, what brings you to counselling, and the beginning of co-creating a space together that supports your wellness and goals in therapy.
Most therapists recommend at the beginning of any therapeutic journey that you book weekly for 2 to 3 weeks to establish a strong foundation for your therapeutic work.
Step 6 - The Right Fit
Starting counselling is a big step for your health and well-being.
The therapeutic process is completely unique to you. That means that you get to decide when you are comfortable to share, what you want to share, and with who. If you think your counsellor may not be the right fit, we encourage you to talk to them first. The majority of the time, you and your counsellor will be able to find a solution together. If you still don’t feel comfortable we encourage you to book a free consultation with another therapist.
